MOTIVES MATTER!

"My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God."  Ephesians 3:14-18 (MSG)

In his work, Loving God, Bernard Clairvaux (AD 1090-1153) describes four degrees of love:

  1. Loving Ourselves for our Own Sake
  2. Loving God for His Gifts and Blessings
  3. Loving God for Him self Alone
  4. Loving Ourselves for the Sake of God

For Bernard, the best love was that we simply love ourselves as God loves us.........to the same breadth, length, depth and height.  We love the 'self' that God loves.........the image of God in us that has been damaged by sin.

Lord, may I grasp the magnitude of Your love for me so that I may live in the experience of it............passing it on to others and to myself!  Amen

It sounds so easy to do. But the more I spend time in the Word and study and read and meditate on the love of Christ I more I am filled with awe and wonder at the grand love that my Heavenly Father has for me. And then to think that I am to love myself in like manner. That is truly amazing.

Yes........I agree Christine. The concept is simple to understand but not easy to do. God's grace is needed........again!
