PICKLING SPICE FAITH

"So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."       Mathew 17:20

I love when God speaks to us through the simple things of life….things which we can relate to.  This is the time of year that people are making pickles and relish and mustard seed is a very common pickling spice we use.

God has used ‘mustard seed’ to describe faith as well as to compare it with the kingdom of God. How does this small seed take a place in God’s word? what is so special in this seed that Jesus even  compared it with the kingdom of God. If you compare it with all the other seeds, it is the smallest among them. But there are some characteristics that makes it different from everything else. Today’s devotion is about mustard seed and when you realize its potential regardless its size, you will understand why Jesus used it to describe faith.

Mustard seed is whole from within and not hollow.   Anything that is not strong from within can easily be destroyed.  Jesus says that if your faith is so strong from within, like the mustard seed, nothing can destroy you and prevent you from receiving miracles.

Mustard seed has the great potential to grow into a large tree.   Looking at the obstacles, you might say that it is impossible to remove them from your life. Change your focus to Jesus and see how big He is and that will help you move that big mountain.

Mustard seed does not get influenced by the other seeds around.  Certain plants cannot be planted near a black walnut tree or even near its roots because they will take the toxins produced by the walnut tree. However a mustard seed can be planted anywhere with any other plants. It will not take on their characteristics. A  person with faith as small as a mustard seed will not be affected by others. Their lack of faith, negativities or even their way of life should not influence your characteristics as a child of God.

God does not look for big faith, but simple and strong faith. A faith that will always point to the cross alone. Next time, when you see the mustard seed, ask God to make your faith perfect and whole like that small seed that has a great potential.

Heavenly Father, Increase the size of my faith and make it as strong as the mustard seed. Help me to live out my faith anywhere and everywhere that others may be moved to see You. Amen.

Thanks for sharing Judy, I didn't realize these things about a mustard seed, but I can see now why Jesus used it to describe faith and the kingdom of heaven. I pray that my faith would take on this type of believing. I know there are times that my faith is strong, but then there are other times that it isn't strong at all.
